Celebrations of the ‘International Day of Yoga’ 2015 in Athens
The Embassy of India, Athens (Greece), in cooperation with Hellenic Yoga Association, ‘The Year of the Yoga 2015 Team’, Indo-Hellenic Society for Culture and Development (ELINEPA) and the Municipality of Nea Smyrni organized two events to celebrate the 1st International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2015 in the Municipality Park of Nea Smyrni in Athens. The programme started at 1100 hours with complete set of common yoga exercises for 35 minutes. More than 40 Yoga schools of Athens and nearby areas representing different traditions of Yoga participated in it. The Mayor of Mea Smyrni Mr Stavros Tzoulakis, Ambassador, families of India-based officers and over 150 yoga enthusiast participated in the exercises. Thereafter, various Yoga teachers held workshops at seven different locations within the park till 1900 hours. Similar workshops were held in Thessaloniki, Patras, Chania, Corfu and other cities of Greece and nearly 4500 people attended these workshops. In the evening, a cultural event was held at 2030 hours which was attended by the Mayor of Nea Smyrni, senior officials of various local bodies, teachers of various Yoga Schools in Greece and over 4oo Yoga enthusiasts. Shri Tsewang Topden, Ambassador; Prof D. Vassiliadis, President of ELINEPA; Mrs Eleni Kossyfidou-Ananda, President of Hellenic Yoga Association; Ms Judi Miles, Head of The Art of Living Hellas and some other pioneers Yoga instructors of Greece addressed the audience on Yoga – its benefits and its holistic approach to health and well being. A short Indian dance performance by Ms Leda Shantala, musical performance by Mr George Mitsikaris and his group (Bansuri) and a Sufi song by Ms Nadia Zahoor enthralled the audience. The event concluded at 2330 hrs which generated immense goodwill for India.
