The Spine Unite of Ganga Hospital and Ganga Research Center, Coimbatore has bagged the prestigious ISSLS Award for 2017.  The award is for the proteamic research work and has been published as a lead scientific article in the European Spine Journal.  The team was headed by Dr. Rajasekar of Ganga Hospital.

This is the first documentation of the presence of bacteria by proteamics and these findings have tremendous implications in the management of low back pain and raise the possibility of back pain being treated medically thus avoiding surgery.  This will have great similarity to the discovery of H.pylari as a cause of peptic ulsers which was successfully treated by appropriate medicines.

The spine surgery unit of Ganga Hospital has won this prestigious ISSLS Award thrice before in the years 2004, 2010 and 2013.  The award winning research was presented in the Athens Meeting of the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine in Athens, Greece on 1 June 2017.

This project was a collaborative effort with Department of Proteamics, Aravind Medical Research Foundation and Department of Plant Biotechnology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.  The project was funded by the Ganga Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation.
